C'est tout l'int\u00e9r\u00eat de l'\u00e9mulation \u2014 pour l'acc\u00e9l\u00e9rer, il n'y a rien \u00e0 modifier dans le programme, il suffit de changer la vitesse de la machine sous lui.<\/p>\n\n<p>Le PC 286 est \u00e9mul\u00e9 par QEMU, qui compte le temps en instructions plut\u00f4t qu'en secondes r\u00e9elles : l'option <code>-icount<\/code> attribue \u00e0 chaque instruction une dur\u00e9e virtuelle fixe. \u00c0 16 MHz, c'est 256 nanosecondes par instruction, soit 3,8 millions d'instructions par seconde \u2014 exactement le d\u00e9bit d'un vrai 80286 \u00e0 16 MHz pour ce programme, dont le co\u00fbt moyen mesur\u00e9 sur le 286 de MAME est de 4,19 cycles par instruction. Pour la version acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9e, la m\u00eame instruction ne co\u00fbte plus que 2 nanosecondes, avec un facteur de bridage de 0,86 pour tomber juste : <strong>429 millions d'instructions par seconde<\/strong> au lieu de 3,8 millions.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"naum-note-box\">La pendule, elle, ne change pas : 60 coups en 15 minutes de temps r\u00e9el, comme pour tout le laboratoire. Les deux versions ont consomm\u00e9 la m\u00eame chose \u2014 15 secondes par coup en m\u00e9diane \u00e0 16 MHz, 16 secondes \u00e0 1800 MHz. <strong>M\u00eame temps de r\u00e9flexion, cent douze fois plus de travail accompli dedans.<\/strong> C'est la seule variable qui change entre les deux colonnes de cet article.<\/div>\n\n<h2>Les m\u00eames adversaires, deux fois<\/h2>\n\n<p>Les deux versions n'ont pas affront\u00e9 le m\u00eame plateau : le gauntlet de classement place chaque moteur face \u00e0 des adversaires de son niveau, et le Psion acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9 est mont\u00e9 de deux \u00e9tages dans l'\u00e9chelle. Traduit en points Elo, cela fait <strong>+243<\/strong> \u2014 en bon accord avec les +232 que donne le classement complet, calcul\u00e9 sur l'ensemble des 456 parties avec toutes les autres connexions du plateau.<\/p>\n\n<p>Deux lignes m\u00e9ritent une r\u00e9serve. Le 0\/3 contre Fruit 2.1 sur ARM9 ne vaut rien statistiquement : trois parties. Et le Mephisto RISC II est le seul adversaire contre lequel l'acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration n'a rien apport\u00e9 \u2014 40 % \u00e0 16 MHz, 35 % \u00e0 1800 MHz. Sur dix parties l'\u00e9cart n'est pas significatif, mais c'est la seule ligne du tableau qui descend, et elle m\u00e9rite d'\u00eatre refaite sur un \u00e9chantillon plus large.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Ce que co\u00fbte un doublement<\/h2>\n\n<p>Le laboratoire compte maintenant plusieurs machines mesur\u00e9es \u00e0 deux vitesses. Les deux premi\u00e8res lignes sont \u00e0 distance de bruit l'une de l'autre et la cote de base du Turbo 16K est \u00e0 prendre avec des pincettes \u2014 8 % sur 358 parties, c'est un plancher o\u00f9 l'\u00e9chelle Elo se comprime. Mais entre le Forte A \u00e0 \u00d718 et le Psion \u00e0 \u00d7112, il n'y a plus d'ambigu\u00eft\u00e9 : <strong>34 points par doublement contre 61<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>L'explication la plus simple est la bonne. Psion 2.13 est un programme de 1987 \u00e0 recherche s\u00e9lective : il \u00e9lague beaucoup, voit loin dans quelques variantes et ignore le reste. Donner cent fois plus de temps \u00e0 un tel programme approfondit les lignes qu'il regarde d\u00e9j\u00e0, mais ne l'am\u00e8ne pas \u00e0 regarder ailleurs. Les erreurs qui lui restent ne sont pas des erreurs de profondeur, et aucune quantit\u00e9 de m\u00e9gahertz ne les corrigera.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Ce que la vitesse change dans les parties<\/h2>\n\n<p>Les parties s'allongent : 58 coups en m\u00e9diane \u00e0 16 MHz, 66 \u00e0 1800 MHz. Le programme acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9 ne gagne pas plus vite, il perd moins vite \u2014 il tient des positions que la version d'\u00e9poque l\u00e2chait au trenti\u00e8me coup.<\/p>\n\n<p>Le mode de d\u00e9cision ne change pas : presque tout se termine par mat, 249 parties sur 283 pour la version lente, 156 sur 173 pour l'acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9e. Ces programmes et ces machines n'abandonnent pas, ils jouent jusqu'au bout.<\/p>\n\n<p>Et il y a ce que l'acc\u00e9l\u00e9ration ne change pas du tout : <strong>sur ses 56 victoires, le Psion acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9 n'en a pas une seule remport\u00e9e depuis un d\u00e9ficit mat\u00e9riel durable.<\/strong> Pas un sacrifice sp\u00e9culatif tenu plus de quatre coups. Il gagne du mat\u00e9riel, puis il le convertit. C'est un mat\u00e9rialiste, et le rester \u00e0 1800 MHz en dit plus long sur la fonction d'\u00e9valuation de 1987 que sur la machine qui l'ex\u00e9cute.<\/p>\n\n<p>L\u00e0 o\u00f9 le gain est le plus visible, c'est contre les machines d\u00e9di\u00e9es des ann\u00e9es 1990 \u2014 Designer Mach III de 20 \u00e0 75 %, Mach IV de 35 \u00e0 85 %, Saitek Sparc de 20 \u00e0 70 % \u2014 plus que contre les programmes DOS, qui r\u00e9sistent mieux. Et il bat d\u00e9sormais des choses qui n'existaient pas quand il a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9crit : Stockfish 11 port\u00e9 sur un 68020, Fruit 2.1 sur 68040, Rebel 6 sur 486.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Trois parties<\/h2>\n\n<p>Les trois qui suivent viennent toutes de la version \u00e0 1800 MHz. Les \u00e9valuations cit\u00e9es sont celles de Stockfish 16 \u00e0 profondeur 22, en pions ; un signe positif est \u00e0 l'avantage de Psion.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"game-title\">1.
