La branche 1.x date du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1990 \u2014 la version 1.32 circule en juillet 1991, la 1.71 suit peu apr\u00e8s. ex\u00e9cuter deux instructions par cycle l\u00e0 o\u00f9 le 486 en ex\u00e9cute au mieux une. Le gain mesur\u00e9, lui, n'a rien de commun d'un programme \u00e0 l'autre : <strong>+181 points pour le 1.71, +44 pour le Pro 6<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Et sur le Pentium, le programme du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1990 passe devant celui de 1996 : 2374 contre 2325.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Le paradoxe du Pentium<\/h2>\n\n<p>La premi\u00e8re explication qui vient \u00e0 l'esprit \u2014 le Pro 6 ne profite pas du Pentium parce qu'il cherche moins loin \u2014 est fausse. C\u00f4t\u00e9 recherche, tout est normal.<\/p>\n\n<p>Ce qui n'est pas normal, c'est la consommation. Le 1.71 sur Pentium ne d\u00e9pense que 606 secondes des 900 de la cadence, contre 882 sur le 486 : il rend ses coups avant d'avoir \u00e9puis\u00e9 son budget, et il gagne quand m\u00eame 123 points. Le Pro 6, lui, d\u00e9pense 801 secondes \u2014 et ne gagne presque rien.<\/p>\n\n<p>Le signe le plus net vient d'une confrontation directe. MChess 1.71 sur 486 figure au tableau des deux versions du Pro 6 :<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n  <li>Pro 6 sur <strong>486<\/strong> contre 1.71 sur 486 : <strong>8,5 \/ 11, soit 77 %<\/strong><\/li>\n  <li>Pro 6 sur <strong>Pentium<\/strong> contre le m\u00eame 1.71 sur 486 : <strong>5,5 \/ 10, soit 55 %<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Le m\u00eame programme, contre le m\u00eame adversaire, fait moins bien sur la machine la plus rapide. Sur une vingtaine de parties l'\u00e9cart n'est pas d\u00e9monstratif \u00e0 lui seul, mais il va dans le m\u00eame sens que les +44 points.<\/p>\n\n<p>Restait une piste mat\u00e9rielle. Le Pro 6 sur Pentium produit <strong>36 coups de plus de 60 secondes<\/strong>, avec une pointe \u00e0 452 secondes, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 il n'en produit que 29 sur le 486 et o\u00f9 le 1.71 sur 486 n'en produit que 3. Des d\u00e9crochages de cette ampleur ressembleraient \u00e0 des blocages de l'\u00e9mulation plut\u00f4t qu'\u00e0 de la r\u00e9flexion. La v\u00e9rification ne le confirme pas : dans ce gauntlet, le Pro 6 sur Pentium marque <strong>33,6 % dans les parties sans coup long et 36,2 % dans celles qui en contiennent un<\/strong>. C'est l'inverse de ce qu'un blocage produirait. Ces coups longs existent, ils ne co\u00fbtent rien au score.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"naum-note-box\"><strong>Les explications techniques, une par une.<\/strong> La profondeur de recherche : \u00e9cart\u00e9e, le tableau ci-dessus la donne normale. Les blocages : \u00e9cart\u00e9s, ils n'ont pas d'effet sur le score. La persistance de l'apprentissage d'une partie sur l'autre : impossible, les deux \u00e9mulateurs jettent leurs \u00e9critures disque. Des r\u00e9glages qui diff\u00e9reraient entre les deux mat\u00e9riels : impossible, le relais impose les m\u00eames frappes de part et d'autre. Restait l'\u00e9talonnage de QEMU, c'est-\u00e0-dire la conversion du budget de la pendule en temps virtuel, propre \u00e0 chaque programme. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 remesur\u00e9 : le Pro 6 re\u00e7oit 95,6 % de son quota de r\u00e9flexion et le 1.71 en re\u00e7oit 101,9 %. L'\u00e9cart de 6,4 % va dans le bon sens mais il vaut environ six points Elo, soit un vingti\u00e8me de ce qu'il faudrait expliquer. Aucune de ces pistes ne rend compte de l'\u00e9cart.<\/div>\n\n<h2>Le tournoi dit la m\u00eame chose<\/h2>\n\n<p>Un gauntlet mesure chaque configuration contre son propre lot d'adversaires : une cote ajust\u00e9e peut toujours cacher un biais d'appariement. Un tournoi toutes rondes entre programmes \u00e9mul\u00e9s l\u00e8ve le doute, parce que tous les participants rencontrent exactement le m\u00eame champ. Sur <strong>2 253 parties, 48 participants, double ronde<\/strong>, douze programmes figurent \u00e0 la fois en 486 \u00e0 33 MHz et en Pentium \u00e0 90 MHz. Mais deux programmes se d\u00e9tachent par le bas, loin du peloton : <strong>MChess Pro 6 \u00e0 +58 et Fritz 2 \u00e0 +4<\/strong>, alors que le suivant, Chess Genius 1, est \u00e0 +98. L'anomalie du Pro 6 n'est donc pas un accident d'appariement de son gauntlet : elle se reproduit sur un jeu de parties enti\u00e8rement diff\u00e9rent, et elle n'est pas isol\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n<p>Cela d\u00e9place la question plut\u00f4t que de la r\u00e9soudre. Ce n'est pas une affaire de g\u00e9n\u00e9ration : Fritz 2 est de 1992 et ne gagne rien, MChess 1.71 est de 1991 et gagne 191 points. Ce n'est pas la recherche : le Pro 6 gagne bien ses deux demi-coups de profondeur en passant au Pentium. Il reste donc deux programmes qui voient plus loin sans jouer mieux, et une explication qui n'est pas encore trouv\u00e9e.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Le mur des moteurs natifs<\/h2>\n\n<p>Les quatre configurations rencontrent deux familles d'adversaires : des machines d\u00e9di\u00e9es et des moteurs \u00e9mul\u00e9s d'un c\u00f4t\u00e9, des moteurs PC natifs tournant sur le Ryzen de l'autre. Contre les moteurs natifs cot\u00e9s 2729, ils font <strong>3,5 %<\/strong> l\u00e0 o\u00f9 leur cote leur promettrait 9 %. La performance correspondante tombe \u00e0 2149 : <strong>172 points de moins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Ce n'est pas une particularit\u00e9 de MChess. Le m\u00eame d\u00e9crochage appara\u00eet sur tous les programmes DOS du laboratoire mesur\u00e9s contre des moteurs natifs, et il ne s'explique ni par les pendules ni par des incidents techniques : ces parties se terminent par mat, r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement. C'est une non-transitivit\u00e9 r\u00e9elle de l'\u00e9chelle, et elle m\u00e9rite son propre article.<\/p>\n\n<h2>Quatre parties<\/h2>\n\n<p>Une par configuration. Les \u00e9valuations cit\u00e9es sont celles de Stockfish 16, en pions, du point de vue de MChess.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"game-title\">1. D'abord, les deux MChess se tiennent dans un mouchoir : 2193 \u00e0 2374, soit la zone des bonnes machines d\u00e9di\u00e9es du d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1990, ce qui est coh\u00e9rent avec ce qu'on attend de programmes PC de cette g\u00e9n\u00e9ration sur ce mat\u00e9riel.<\/p>\n\n<p>Ensuite, le Pentium profite beaucoup au 1.71 et presque pas au Pro 6. Le r\u00e9sultat tient : il se reproduit sur un tournoi toutes rondes de 2 253 parties o\u00f9 tous les participants affrontent le m\u00eame champ, et Fritz 2 y pr\u00e9sente la m\u00eame anomalie, en plus marqu\u00e9e encore. Les explications techniques auxquelles on pense d'abord \u2014 profondeur insuffisante, blocages de l'\u00e9mulation, apprentissage qui persiste, r\u00e9glages divergents, \u00e9talonnage fauss\u00e9 \u2014 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 test\u00e9es une par une et ne rendent pas compte de l'\u00e9cart. Il faut donc prendre le +44 du Pro 6 pour ce qu'il est, un r\u00e9sultat, sans savoir encore pourquoi deux de ces programmes ne tirent presque rien d'un mat\u00e9riel 2,7 fois plus rapide alors qu'ils cherchent visiblement plus profond.<\/p>\n\n<p>Enfin, le mur des moteurs natifs est ici parfaitement visible : 55,4 % contre des adversaires \u00e9mul\u00e9s \u00e0 2277, 3,5 % contre des moteurs natifs \u00e0 2729. Cent soixante-douze points d'\u00e9cart entre les deux performances du m\u00eame programme, dans les m\u00eames conditions de pendule, sur des parties qui se terminent par mat.
