Il a remport\u00e9 le Championnat du monde des ordinateurs \u00e0 New York en 1983 et \u00e0 Cologne en 1986, avant de c\u00e9der le titre \u00e0 Deep Thought en 1989. La version utilis\u00e9e ici est la 4.9h, dat\u00e9e du 9 d\u00e9cembre 1990 : c&#8217;est la version publi\u00e9e par Hyatt, celle de la fin de carri\u00e8re du programme, qui tournait alors sur les Cray Y-MP. Son successeur direct est Crafty, du m\u00eame auteur, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chess.lumn.eu\/wordpress\/2026\/10\/20\/crafty-19-15-arm9-machine-dediee-virtuelle\/\">mesur\u00e9 sur la m\u00eame machine ARM9<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ce Fortran de supercalculateur a \u00e9t\u00e9 compil\u00e9 pour trois processeurs qu&#8217;il n&#8217;a jamais connus, et charg\u00e9 en cartouche dans quatre <strong>machines d\u00e9di\u00e9es virtuelles<\/strong>. Ce sont des s\u0153urs des machines 68020, 68040 et ARM9 d\u00e9crites dans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chess.lumn.eu\/wordpress\/2026\/09\/29\/stockfish-11-68020-68040\/\">Stockfish 11 &amp; Fruit 2.1 : 68020, 68040 &amp; ARM<\/a> : un processeur, de la m\u00e9moire, une horloge en millisecondes et un port s\u00e9rie pour parler au monde ; pas de syst\u00e8me d&#8217;exploitation, pas de disque, pas d&#8217;\u00e9cran. Le programme d\u00e9marre \u00ab \u00e0 nu \u00bb, comme le ferait le logiciel d&#8217;un Mephisto ou d&#8217;un Fidelity.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ARM9 \u00e0 30 MHz<\/strong> (ARMv5TE), \u00e9mul\u00e9 par MAME, brid\u00e9 au temps r\u00e9el : la machine r\u00e9fl\u00e9chit exactement comme le ferait le mat\u00e9riel. 30 MHz est la fr\u00e9quence du TASC R30 de 1993, valeur d&#8217;\u00e9poque pour une machine d\u00e9di\u00e9e.<\/li>\n<li><strong>486DX \u00e0 33 MHz<\/strong>, <strong>Pentium \u00e0 90 MHz<\/strong> et <strong>ARM9 \u00e0 300 MHz<\/strong>, \u00e9mul\u00e9s par QEMU. MAME interpr\u00e8te ces processeurs instruction par instruction et ne tient pas le temps r\u00e9el au-del\u00e0 de quelques dizaines de m\u00e9gahertz ; QEMU traduit le code et va bien plus vite. Son horloge virtuelle avance d&#8217;un pas fixe par instruction ex\u00e9cut\u00e9e, et ce temps est ramen\u00e9 \u00e0 celui du vrai processeur par une \u00e9chelle \u00e9talonn\u00e9e contre la machine MAME, sur les m\u00eames recherches. Le relais retient ensuite le coup jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 ce que le temps r\u00e9el \u00e9coul\u00e9 soit celui du mat\u00e9riel : la pendule est d\u00e9bit\u00e9e comme sur une vraie machine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cray Blitz ne parle pas UCI : c&#8217;est un programme de console qui pose des questions \u00e0 un op\u00e9rateur. Un relais Python y r\u00e9pond, lui pose la position, lui transmet le coup adverse et lui fixe un temps par coup ; il traduit ses coups en notation UCI pour cutechess. Deux traits du programme d&#8217;origine ont \u00e9t\u00e9 conserv\u00e9s : il ne peut pas \u00eatre interrompu, le coup arrive quand il a fini ; et, comme sur le Cray, il s&#8217;autorise \u00e0 d\u00e9passer le temps accord\u00e9 pour ne pas perdre de mat\u00e9riel. Le relais en tient compte dans le temps qu&#8217;il lui donne. Son livre d&#8217;ouvertures est celui de Cray Blitz, 68 679 positions, d&#8217;o\u00f9 les 1.b3 et les 1&#8230;b6 que l&#8217;on va voir.<\/p>\n<div class=\"box naum-coherence-box\"><span class=\"box-titre\">MAME et QEMU donnent le m\u00eame 486<\/span><br \/>\nLes tests BT-2450 et BT-2630 ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pass\u00e9s sur le 486DX 33 MHz \u00e9mul\u00e9 par MAME et sur celui \u00e9mul\u00e9 par QEMU : 2008 et 2075 pour l&#8217;un, 2007 et 2074 pour l&#8217;autre, avec les m\u00eames positions r\u00e9solues (18 et 14 sur 30). L&#8217;\u00e9talonnage de l&#8217;horloge virtuelle tient : les deux machines r\u00e9solvent les m\u00eames positions dans les m\u00eames temps.<\/div>\n<h2>Le r\u00e9sultat<\/h2>\n<p>Quatre gauntlets selon la r\u00e8gle habituelle du laboratoire : une \u00e9chelle d&#8217;adversaires \u00e0 cote fixe, dix parties par marche, arr\u00eat quand l&#8217;\u00e9chelle est perdue, puis un compl\u00e9ment contre les adversaires du milieu de l&#8217;\u00e9chelle. Cadence 60 coups en 15 minutes, 15 secondes par coup en pratique. Le 486 \u00e0 33 MHz et l&#8217;ARM9 \u00e0 30 MHz jouent \u00e0 huit points l&#8217;un de l&#8217;autre, et r\u00e9solvent les tests BT \u00e0 deux points pr\u00e8s : pour Cray Blitz, ces deux processeurs sont la m\u00eame machine. Le Pentium 90 et l&#8217;ARM9 \u00e0 300 MHz sont \u00e0 douze points l&#8217;un de l&#8217;autre, 160 points plus haut. \u00c0 l&#8217;int\u00e9rieur de chaque groupe, l&#8217;\u00e9cart est bien en dessous de l&#8217;incertitude des mesures (une vingtaine de points \u00e0 1 \u03c3 sur 150 \u00e0 250 parties).<\/p>\n<p>La profondeur suit : 4,8 \u00e0 4,9 demi-coups en moyenne sur les machines lentes, 5,7 sur le Pentium, 6,5 sur l&#8217;ARM9 rapide. Cray Blitz n&#8217;it\u00e8re pas finement : \u00e0 15 secondes il termine sa profondeur 5 ou sa profondeur 6, et c&#8217;est le passage de l&#8217;une \u00e0 l&#8217;autre, plus que les n\u0153uds par seconde, qui fait les 160 points. Le programme utilise sa pendule avec r\u00e9gularit\u00e9 : 14,2 \u00e0 14,6 secondes par coup en moyenne, 7 % des coups au-del\u00e0 de 20 secondes (le d\u00e9passement autoris\u00e9 quand une pi\u00e8ce est en jeu), et aucune partie perdue au temps en 844 parties.<\/p>\n<div class=\"box naum-note-box\"><span class=\"box-titre\">Parties en double<\/span><br \/>\nCray Blitz et ses adversaires sont d\u00e9terministes, et le livre de Cray Blitz ne tire pas au sort : quand la m\u00eame ligne d&#8217;ouverture revient contre le m\u00eame adversaire, la partie enti\u00e8re se r\u00e9p\u00e8te. Sur les quatre gauntlets, 229 des 844 parties sont la copie exacte d&#8217;une autre (56 sur 208 pour le 486, 58 sur 226 pour l&#8217;ARM9 30 MHz, 87 sur 250 pour le Pentium, 28 sur 160 pour l&#8217;ARM9 300 MHz). Ordo les compte toutes, comme pour les machines CB-Emu de la liste, qui ont le m\u00eame travers. L&#8217;\u00e9chantillon utile est donc d&#8217;environ 615 parties distinctes, et les scores contre un adversaire donn\u00e9 (dix parties, souvent trois ou quatre lignes diff\u00e9rentes) ne veulent pas dire grand-chose pris un par un.<\/div>\n<h2>Ce que valent les processeurs, vus par Cray Blitz<\/h2>\n<p>C&#8217;est le v\u00e9ritable objet de ces quatre gauntlets. Cray Blitz est dans la moyenne : le passage de g\u00e9n\u00e9ration x86 lui profite comme aux autres.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ARM9 300 contre ARM9 30 : +173 pour dix fois l&#8217;horloge<\/strong>, soit 52 points par doublement de vitesse. C&#8217;est un peu moins que les 60 \u00e0 70 points par doublement observ\u00e9s sur les machines d\u00e9di\u00e9es acc\u00e9l\u00e9r\u00e9es du laboratoire. Les tests BT disent la m\u00eame chose : +165 et +143 points BT entre les deux fr\u00e9quences.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ARM9 30 MHz contre 486DX 33 : \u22128.<\/strong> Rien. \u00c0 fr\u00e9quence \u00e9gale, Cray Blitz ne fait aucune diff\u00e9rence entre le RISC de 1997 et le CISC de 1989.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ce dernier point est celui qui compte, parce qu&#8217;un autre programme dit le contraire. <strong>Stockfish 11<\/strong>, sur les m\u00eames machines : 2695 sur le 486DX 33 MHz, 2829 sur l&#8217;ARM9 \u00e0 30 MHz, soit <strong>+134<\/strong> pour l&#8217;ARM. Pour Stockfish, l&#8217;ARM9 \u00e0 30 MHz vaut presque un Pentium 90 ; pour Cray Blitz, il vaut un 486. Le gain d&#8217;un processeur n&#8217;est pas une propri\u00e9t\u00e9 du processeur : c&#8217;est une propri\u00e9t\u00e9 du couple programme-processeur.<\/p>\n<p>Une hypoth\u00e8se, \u00e0 v\u00e9rifier avec le profileur du pilote MAME : Stockfish passe son temps dans des bitboards 64 bits qu&#8217;il manipule par multiplications (les <em>magic bitboards<\/em>) et par recherche du premier bit ; l&#8217;ARM9 a une multiplication 32\u00d732\u219264 en quelques cycles et une instruction CLZ, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 le 486 multiplie en treize cycles et plus et cherche un bit lentement. Cray Blitz, \u00e9crit pour un Cray, manipule aussi des mots de 64 bits, mais \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re de 1980 : sans multiplication magique, avec des tables et des d\u00e9calages que le compilateur Fortran traduit \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s de la m\u00eame fa\u00e7on pour les deux processeurs. Le code Fortran, de surcro\u00eet, passe par un compilateur dont la g\u00e9n\u00e9ration ARM n&#8217;a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9gl\u00e9e pour lui. Rien de tout cela n&#8217;est prouv\u00e9 ; c&#8217;est l&#8217;objet d&#8217;un article \u00e0 venir.<\/p>\n<h3>\u00c9tat du classement des plateformes<\/h3>\n<p>En r\u00e9unissant tous les programmes mesur\u00e9s sur au moins deux machines (les douze programmes DOS, Fruit 2.1, Stockfish 11, Rebel 6 natif et Cray Blitz), un ajustement par moindres carr\u00e9s donne \u00e0 chaque plateforme un bonus, le 486DX 33 MHz servant d&#8217;origine. Celle-ci est la plus courte et la plus brutale. Elle est aussi la plus instructive sur la mani\u00e8re de jouer du programme : une ouverture de livre douteuse, vingt coups de r\u00e9sistance passive pendant que le Mephisto s&#8217;installe, puis, d\u00e8s que l&#8217;adversaire rel\u00e2che la pression, une combinaison \u00e0 deux sacrifices de tour que Cray Blitz calcule jusqu&#8217;au mat en quelques secondes.
